Material Revolution

Speaker

Gnanli Landrou

Oxara, an ETH spin-off founded in 2019, develops circular, cement-free, and low-CO2 mineral materials derived from excavation and construction waste, offering viable alternatives to conventional construction materials.

Oxara focusses on three key materials produced within the existing infrastructure of the construction industry-ensuring seamless integration into current processes: The Oulesse cement-free concrete; The poured earth Nossim and The Loko compressed earth blocks.

The way we live today in the Global North is built on the construction of high-quality housing and infrastructure. Unfortunately, this way led to resource depletion and significant carbon emissions. As climate change and resources scarcity became the major challenge of our generations, it is vital to rethink construction and limit future emissions. This requires a paradigm and technology shift in the construction sector. As native Togolese growing up in a clay house, awards winning, Forbes U30 nominee, advisor and lecturer, Dr. Gnanli Landrou challenges the status quo in construction with his ETH spin-off Oxara. With the goal in mind to help accelerate the transition towards sustainable and circular built environment, Oxara is developing a cement-free, low carbon binder, and concrete made from waste excavation material and construction demolition waste.
